Bilingual Education in DPSCD

The Detroit Public Schools Community District Office of Bilingual Education and Related Programs educates children to become effective and productive dual language citizens and master the English Language.

We also offer world languages in our schools, including dual language immersion programs that begin in preschool, to more than 7000 students.

We also serve more than 6,000 bilingual students, speaking 30 different languages in schools throughout the district, helping them to learn the English Language and American culture while mastering core subject areas.

Our celebrated language schools include the Academy of the Americas, where our students are nurtured to excel in academics and become literate in both Spanish and English, and the Foreign Language Immersion and Cultural Studies Schools (FLICS), where students can experience a rigorous core curriculum and immersion in French, Spanish, Japanese or Chinese.
