Western International High School student reaches big dreams, drafted to MLB

DPSCD student and No. 1 Michigan prospect drafted in the fifth round

DETROIT – June 5, 2018 – Western International High School senior and baseball player, William English, age 17, was selected in the fifth round of the 2018 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft by the Los Angeles Angels. English, a 6-foot-4 right-handed pitcher and outfielder, is one of the youngest players in this year’s draft class and began playing baseball at the age of three.  With a 90-93 mile per hour (mph) fastball, English was named the No. 1 top MLB draft prospect in Michigan. This past year, English was heavily scouted by numerous teams including the Texas Rangers, Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves, Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals before being selected by the Angels.

“It’s truly an honor and I’ve worked very hard this off-season to prepare for this year’s draft,” said English. “Now, I get to start on the path to my dream.”

Principal Garcia and Coach Sanchez also commended the student-athlete on his preparation and accomplishments that led to being drafted.

“It’s a great moment for our school and athletics,” said Angel Garcia, principal at Western International High School. “We haven’t had a player drafted to a major professional organization in quite some time. I really think it’s great for future generations. I’m very proud of William and so is the rest of our staff.  I look forward to watching him when he comes to play the Tigers.”

Western Cowboys baseball coach, Juan Carlos Sanchez, added, “It’s a dream come true for all of us as coaches. All of us have had our own baseball stories—dreaming of making it to the majors or at least having the opportunity. To see one of your kids have his dream come true, it’s a blessing.”

This past November, English was offered a scholarship and signed with the University of Tennessee after receiving offers from North Carolina A&T, Central Michigan University, Michigan State University, Bethune College and four junior colleges.  Although he will soon be traveling to California to follow his dream, he contends that he will eventually go to college and complete a degree in business.  English has received All-City honors for four years and was most recently named a nominee for Mr. Baseball, Athlete of the Year, Double Duty Classic, East Coast Pro and 2018 MHSB All Star.

“I promised my mom I’d go back to school no matter what, and a promise is a promise,” he said.

DPSCD alumnus is drafted to a Super Bowl Championship team

Former Martin Luther King High School football, basketball and baseball player Avonte Maddox was drafted by the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles this weekend. He was a 2014 graduate of King and held a 3.6 grade point average upon graduating.

Rated by 247sports as a three-star prospect after graduating King, Avonte committed to the University of Pittsburgh, where he was an immediate contributor as he played in all 13 games as a freshman and started all 13 games at cornerback as a sophomore in 2015. During his senior campaign he had a team-high 11 pass breakups and three forced fumbles. He earned All-ACC honors from both the media (second team) and the coaches (third team).

DPSCD is proud of Avonte on his monumental success and will be rooting for him throughout his career in the NFL.
