On Tuesday, January 20th, history that many believed they would never see, will be made when president elect, Senator Barack Obama is sworn in as the President of the United States of America. Among the hundreds of thousands who will flock to Washington to witness this event will be students from the Detroit Public Schools.

Extensive classroom and school, election and presidential campaign projects during the months leading up to Election Day familiarized DPS students with the candidates, the campaign process, the responsibility of voting, and the governance of the nation. It also ignited their interest in the inauguration. To foster this interest, the DPS Board of Education created the Presidential Inauguration of Barack Obama and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Creative Expression Contest in recognition of the work of Dr. King and the promise of Senator Obama.

The Contest opens the doors for the students to express themselves creatively using one of two themes as a guide:
-The Dream Promotes Change
-“Rosa Parks sat so (Dr.) Martin Luther King, Jr. could walk. Martin walked so Obama could run. Obama is running so we all can fly.” – Jay-Z.

Every DPS student in grades 1 through 12 is eligible to submit an entry choosing from several categories – essay, poem, music/Rap, power point /video or artwork. Every child will receive a Certificate of Participation and ten will receive trophies. A few of the entries will be selected for display at Board Meetings and in the Welcome Center for the public to see. But 49 winners in the contest will receive the prize of a lifetime-an all expense paid trip to the inauguration of the Nation’s 44th president.

Students are currently working on their projects and have from Friday, December 5 until 5:00 pm. Friday, December 19 to turn them in to the Board of Education office. Judging will be held during the Christmas break. The winner will be announced shortly after schools reopen in January.
