Nearly 96 percent of Detroit Public Schools’ facilities management employees participated in the first four days of a job fair being held by Sodexo and seven local and minority-owned business partners who will assume custodial, building repair, maintenance, engineering and grounds services for the district.
Friday is the final day of the job fair being held exclusively for current DPS employees at the DPS Welcome Center in Detroit’s New Center area. Each employee completes a job application and receives an individual interview as well as undergoing a background check and drug testing.
“The total number of applicants that we interviewed was 669 by Thursday afternoon,” said Patricia Bryson, Sodexo Human Resources Director. “Our goal when we began was to interview all 699 DPS current facilities management employees by the end of the job fair and we are extremely pleased with this overwhelming turnout.”
The 30 remaining employees who had not yet completed the application process Thursday have until noon Friday to do so. Employees who miss the job fair altogether will be contacted by mail by Sodexo and its partners to provide one last opportunity to go through the application process.
“We and our partners are extremely gratified with the response and have already started the hiring process,” Bryson said. “We will start distributing contingent offer letters to our future employees next week.”
Sodexo and its seven minority-owned business partners were awarded a five year contract to save the district $75 million for school maintenance and engineering services. The partners, all minority-owned businesses include five Detroit-based businesses: Powerlink Facility Management Services, Payne Landscaping, Rickman Enterprise Group, Hercules & Hercules and White Glove Professional Cleaning Inc., as well as Midwest Environmental Services Group and Covenant Cleaning Services.
