King High’s Carlos McSwain enjoyed everything about playing in last year’s Detroit Public School Leauge baseball championship game at Comerica Park. Everything, that is, except the ending.

“It was exciting having the opportunity to play in that game,”’ McSwain said. “With it being the first (Comerica Park) night game for the PSL title, playing under the lights just added to the whole atmosphere. But losing the game was heart-breaking.”

The Crusaders’ 12-2 mercy-rule loss to three-time defending champion Western took just four innings. But last year’s disappointment has been a constant motivation for McSwain and his teammates to try to get back to this year’s title game, set for Thursday, May 19.

“We came back stronger this year with more fight,’’ said McSwain, the PSL’s Proud Strong Learner of the Week. “Our goal all season has been to get back to the city championship game. We want to win it.”

McSwain, the Crusaders’ senior team captain and starting second baseman, is batting .300 and plays solid defense, but his biggest contribution might be his leadership. He is credited with helping to foster a positive attitude for Coach Norm Taylor’s team which entered Friday’s PSL East Division showdown against Cass Tech with a 7-0 league record.

“Carlos McSwain is a hard worker and a perfect example of the discipline and work ethic that it takes to be a good student-athlete,’’ Taylor said. “He’s played for me for three years and has always led by example. It helps that he has exceptional parents who are extremely supportive of not only him but all the kids in our program.”

In addition to second base, McSwain plays the outfield and pitches. He also competes in cross country, where he has twice made the All-PSL team.

“When I first started cross country, it was to stay in shape, but it challenges you in different ways,’’ he said. “It’s such a long, rigorous race that it helps build your determination and makes you learn to fight and not give up.”

With a 3.0 grade point average, McSwain said he hopes to play baseball in college and plans to major in mechanical engineering.  Being chosen PSLer of the Week has stoked his fire to end his high school career on top.

“I’m very proud to be selected for that honor,’’ he said. “I’m at a loss for words, but I’m happy. My goal now is to finish high school with good grades and help my team go as far as we can go. ”

Vote now through May 19 for the PSL Proud Strong Learner of the Year. Click The most recent weekly honorees will be added to the ballot as they’re named.
