The Detroit Public School League football season heats up Friday night at Cass Tech High where the defending Division I state champion Technicians host the Renaissance High Phoenix in the 7 o’clock PSL Game of the Week.

Both teams earned decisive victories in their PSL openers last week as Cass Tech shut out Northwestern 57-0 and Renaissance downed Western 41-6 to forge a three-way tie with Cody for the West Division lead.

In the other PSL West game last week, Cody blanked Ford 54-0 while, in the East Division, East English Village beat King 34-26, Pershing shut out Osborn 16-0, Douglass defeated Central 28-12, and Denby beat Southeastern 20-12. Mumford lost to nonleague foe Warren Collegiate 48-12.

Friday’s contest under the lights at Cass Tech is not just the PSL Game of the Week, but 74 per cent of voters also chose it as the “7 On Your Sidelines Meijer Game of the Week” in a poll conducted by Channel 7 WXYZ TV.

Friday’s other key matchup is at East English Village, where the Bulldogs will host Douglass at 4 p.m. in the first-ever home game played on the brand new school’s artificial turf field. The game matches last year’s PSL Division II champions, Douglass, against the same coaching staff and many of the same players who played for now-closed Crockett, last year’s PSL Division I champions.

Other league games Friday (all 4 p.m. starts) include Denby at Central, Osborn at King, Pershing at Southeastern, Ford at Northwestern, and Mumford at Cody (at Renaissance). Western plays University of Detroit Jesuit in a 7 p.m. nonleague game at Ferndale.
