Douglass at King, Cody vs. Western loom large in PSL football playoff picture

The winners of Friday’s (Sept. 28) games between Douglass at King and Cody vs. Western stand to gain the inside track on advancing to the Detroit Public School League football semifinals.

East English Village (4-0 league, 4-1 overall) has all but sewn up the East Division and, likewise, Cass Tech (3-0 league, 4-1 overall) holds down the top spot in the West Division.

What’s at stake now is rounding out the four-team PSL playoff field. This week’s games will bring that picture clearer into focus.

Douglass, (3-1 league, 3-2 overall) currently stands second in the East, while host King (2-2 league, 2-3 overall) enters Friday’s 4 p.m. game in a tie for third.

In the West, control of second place will also be on the line when Cody (3-1, 3-2) plays host Western (2-1, 2-3) at 4 p.m at Southwestern High’s field.

Other games Friday (all 4 p.m. starts except where noted) include Central (2-2, 2-3) at East English Village 7 p.m.; Denby (2-2, 2-3) at Pershing (1-3, 2-3); Southeastern (1-3, 1-4) at Osborn (1-3, 1-4); Ford (2-2, 2-3) at Cass Tech;  Mumford (0-3, 0-5) at Northwestern (0-3, 1-4); and (nonleague) Plymouth Educational Center at Renaissance (2-2, 2-3) 5 p.m.

Cass Tech, the defending Division 1 state champions, jumps back into league action after suffering its first loss of the season last week, 13-6, at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, last year’s Division III state champions.

The PSL semifinals are slated for Friday, Oct. 12 at Northwestern High School and will match the first-place team in the East against the second-place team in the West at 5 p.m. followed by the first-place team in the West against the second-place team in the East at 7 p.m. The PSL championship game is scheduled for 6 p.m Friday, Oct. 19 , also at Northwestern.
