DPS Students to Become First-Ever Wayne State University Detroit Urban Scholars Award Recipients

The Detroit Public Schools Office of Guidance and Counseling has announced that 25 DPS high school seniors were selected to receive the inaugural Detroit Urban Scholars Scholarship from Wayne State University. DPS students received 25 of the 30 scholarships offered.

The Detroit Urban Scholars Scholarship is awarded to high-achieving incoming freshmen who have shown promise in their ability to excel academically as well as provide a continuous service and leadership stance in their communities. The students selected to receive the scholarship will be awarded a total of $24,000 ($6,000 per year for four consecutive years).

“Detroit has a body of talented and gifted students with a lot to offer,” said Dr. Barbara K. Smith, Director, DPS Office of Guidance and Counseling. “I am confident they will see as much success at Wayne State as they did at DPS – especially with the support they are due to receive as a part of their scholarships.”

Along with receiving the scholarship and becoming the first-ever WSU Detroit Urban Scholars students, each recipient will be appointed a mentor, have access to WSU’s Honors College Library and any additional support they may need for a successful college career.

Students who received the scholarship award met the following criteria:

  • A Detroit resident attending a high school within the city of Detroit;
  • Completed a WSU admissions application that was due November 30, 2012;
  • Attained a minimum ACT score of 22;
  • Attended Urban Scholars Day January 26, 2012.

Additionally, students were required to write a personal message of 200 words completing the following statements:

  • I am proud to be a Detroiter because…
  • I show my pride in this city giving back in the following ways…

“I think this is a strong indication of the close relationship WSU has with the students of Detroit and their confidence in urban youth,” said Smith.
