Cass Tech’s bid for a third consecutive Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 football state championship ended in disappointment Saturday with a 28-0 loss against Novi Detroit Catholic Central in the semifinal game at Troy Athens High School.

On a bone-chilling day, Coach Thomas Wilcher’s Technicians were shut out by the same opponent they defeated the last two years in the state finals at Ford Field.

The loss ended Cass Tech’s season with a 12-1 record and snapped an 18-game winning streak.

King, in pursuit of its first state championship since winning the Division 2 crown in 2007, also met with defeat in the semifinal game at Wayne State University. Coach Dale Harvel’s Crusaders lost 43-20 against two-time defending Division 2 state champion Birmingham Brother Rice and ended the season with a 10-2 record.

Cass and King fell one victory shy of becoming the first Detroit Public School League football duo to reach the state finals in the same season.
