Big D girls’ and boys’ tournaments pared to eight teams

Eight teams resumed play Monday in the second round of the Big D girls’ basketball tournament.

At King High, Cody plays Pershing at 4 p.m. followed by Mumford against Cass Tech at 5:30 p.m. At Mumford High, DCP-Northwestern plays Renaissance at 4 p.m. and Osborn plays King at 5:30 p.m.

The winners advance to the Detroit Public School League semifinals Thursday, Feb. 13, at Western High School. The girls’ league championship game is 5 p.m.,  Feb. 21 at U-D Mercy Calihan Hall.

The second-round of the Big D boys’ tournament is scheduled for Tuesday at East English Village High and Renaissance High.

At East English, Pershing plays Osborn at 4 p.m.; followed by Douglass against Renaissance at 5:30 p.m. At Renaissance, East English Village plays Cass Tech at 4 p.m. followed by Ford against Southeastern at 5:30 p.m.

The winners advance to the PSL boys’ semifinals Friday, Feb. 14 at Cass Tech High School. The boys’ league championship game is 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21 at U-D Mercy Calihan Hall. Admission to the championship doubleheader is $10.

In boys’ opening-round action Friday, Feb. 7: Douglass beat CMA 44-40 in overtime, Pershing defeated Western 69-61, Osborn beat Cody 59-43, Renaissance defeated Central 58-40, East English ousted Mumford 68-54, Cass beat King 61-51, Ford beat Denby 63-52 and Southeastern defeated DCP-Northwestern 74-41.

Girls’ first-round scores (from  Wednesday, Feb. 5): Cass Tech 53, Central 15; Cody 72, Denby 59; King 79, West Side 13; Mumford 59, East English Village Prep 29; Osborn 43, Western 36; Pershing 54, Ford 36; DCP-Northwestern 1, Southeastern 0 (forfeit); Renaissance 1, DIA 0 (forfeit)
