With a district championship already in tow, King High’s girls’ basketball team (22-1) goes for the Class A regional championship tonight (Thursday, March 12) at 7 p.m. when it plays Sterling Heights (15-9) at Grosse Pointe South High School.

Coach William Winfield’s Lady Crusaders won their fourth consecutive Detroit Public School League championship Feb. 20 and have looked the part in the MHSAA tournament, beating host Grosse Pointe South 43-36 in Tuesday’s regional semifinals to move within striking range of a state championship.

A victory tonight would advance King into next Tuesday’s (March 17) quarterfinals — just three victories from the ultimate prize.

Henry Ford saw its season end Tuesday with a 52-32 loss against Warren Fitzgerald in the Class B regional at Dearborn Divine Child.  Coach LaTisha Wallace’s Lady Trojans (14-9) were the PSL’s only girls’ team besides King to win a district title this season.

Eight PSL boys’ teams will be vying for district championships Friday (March 13) after advancing with victories Wednesday. PSL teams collide in three district finals.
