Congratulations Drew Transition Center!

Local community organization Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency, through their Seeding Detroit Mini-Grant Award, honored the 2016 Volunteer of the Year Spotlight: Michael Craig & the Charles Drew Transition Center for the work done in providing members of the community with very low cost produce, thus helping to establish healthy eating habits in the home. The award ceremony was held at a luncheon at the Ford Event and Conference Center in Dearborn, MI. Among those in attendance were other heads of corporations affiliated with Wayne Metro, community agency leaders, and members of the press.

Drew, staff members and the Horticultural Program were also awarded a 2016 Sustainable Community Champion Award by the EcoWorks organization. This award recognizes specific sustainable growing methods, namely our two distinct hydroponic systems, repurposing of materials and other innovative growing methods carefully designed to save on water usage, electricity, giving students concrete teachable lessons on environmental stewardship. EcoWorks is a DPSCD partner in helping to facilitate the Go Green Challenge through DPSCD’s Office of Energy.

This award was presented at The Detroit Yacht Club at EcoWork’s 35th Annual Breakfast Recognition Event. Link:

Would love to have you visit Drew, to see for yourself what we are doing with our horticulture program and other programs, so you may get an accurate scope of all our comprehensive programs.

For example, did you know, even though the weather has taken a turn for the colder, that we are still in full growing mode outside in the hoop houses, and with our indoor hydroponic systems, currently have over 700 lettuce plants growing to full maturity? Will make for a great harvest, for our Eastern Market ventures!
