The Ultimate Thinkers 2017 DPSCD Chess Awards

On Saturday, January 28 numerous parents braved the cold winter weather in support of their children and to witness which teams will walk away with the honor of being the best at chess in the Detroit Public Schools Community District. This is the day when awards are given to teams that participated in the Detroit Metro Scholastic Chess League (DMSCL) based on the outcome of their 12-week season.

The following schools are home to active, critical thinking, tournament winning chess teams: Ann Arbor Trail, Bates Academy, Bow, Chrysler, Fisher Upper, Garvey, Ludington, Sampson-Webber, Ben Carson, Cass Tech, Detroit Collegiate Prep, East English Village, ML King and Renaissance.

The final standings of our DPSCD schools in the Detroit Metro Scholastic Chess League are as follows:

Elementary:            Chrysler 1st Place, Bates Academy 2nd Place, and Ludington 3rd Place.

Middle/ Jr. High:   Bates Academy 1st Place,   Marcus Garvey 2nd Place, and Sampson-Webber 3rd Place.

Based on their participation and ranking in the DMSCL, elementary school students will be able to compete in the Michigan Chess Association (MCA) State Championships for Elementary & Primary students which will convene in Auburn Hills, MI at Baker College on Saturday, February 4th. Look for our DPS winners to be shared in future announcements.

The Michigan Chess Association (MCA) State Championships for Middle and High School teams will take place on February 25th at Oakland University in Rochester, MI. Our students will compete against students from all across Michigan. Continue to send winning wishes to all of our state participants.

Our state winners will gear up to compete in this year’s Super National Scholastic Championship Tournament that will draw thousands of competitors from all 50 states. Students from each division (elementary, middle and high school) will travel to Nashville, TN, in May 2017.  We expect that many students will return home with numerous trophies, medals and awards.
