Financial Review Commission approves DPSCD/DFT contract

Today the FRC approved the 3-year teacher contract, finalizing the agreement between DPSCD and the DFT and increasing teacher salaries for the first time in a decade.
The agreement had previously been ratified by the DFT and approved by the DPSCD board. The contract, which provides teachers with a 7 percent raise over the next two years, places an emphasis on increases for first year teachers and veteran teachers. In addition, the agreement increased the teacher steps from 10 to 15.
“The salary increases associated with this agreement are far from what our teachers deserve,” said Dr. Nikolai Vitti, DPSCD Superintendent. “However, it will be rewarding to provide teachers a necessary increase to their salary as the first step in making teacher salaries whole again after nearly a decade of neglect.”
Returning teachers at the top steps of the current salary schedule will receive a $1,750 bonus in September 2017. At the beginning of the second semester, teachers employed before the start of the second semester of the previous year move at least one step when transitioning to the new salary schedule. In the 2018-19 school year, teachers move an additional step and the top steps increases by 4.13%.
“Our most important employees are our teachers,” stressed Dr. Vitti. “We must, and will, prioritize competitive salaries for Detroit teachers as we all work together to rebuild our district.”
