Munger Leads When Munger Reads Early Childhood and Early Literacy Program Pilot to Kick off in January 2018

Read Across America Day

Read Across America Day was celebrated yesterday signifying Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Students all across DPSCD honored the great author in many ways. Munger’s second grade class celebrated Read Across America Day by bringing in their Dr. Seuss character stuffed animals and taking turns reading. Kindergarten classes at Coleman A. Young ate green eggs and ham while reading Green Eggs and Ham. Students in grades 3 and 4 watched Dr. Seuss movies and compared them to the books while 5th grade classes made wacky socks after reading Fox in Socks!  We are celebrating Reading Awareness Month in March!

DPS’ Munger Elementary-Middle School Celebrates Autism Awareness Month by Showcasing Art Gallery In Memory of Mary Fussell, ASD Art Teacher

In conjunction with Autism Awareness Month and in memory of ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) Art Therapist Mary Fussell, Munger Elementary-Middle School is sponsoring an Autism Awareness Month Art Gallery on Thursday, April 28. The gallery will highlight the artistic talent of the students in Munger’s ASD program. Each classroom in the ASD program submitted a project of their choosing to display at this gallery showing. The projects will range from large group projects where all of the students contribute or individual projects that are put on one singular display board. Also in honor of Autism Awareness Month, the suggested colors for the display boards are blue and white. Detroit Public Schools’ students participated in the 5th Annual SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) International Motorized Toy Car Competition April, 12-13 at Cobo Center. Read with the Principal Night at Munger!

Munger Elementary-Middle School hosted its First Annual “Reading with the Principal Night” honoring Dr. Seuss’ Birthday, on March 9. The theme was “PJ ‘s and Popcorn” and Principal Donnell Burroughs read Green Eggs and Ham to over 230 PreK-4th grade students. Students and some staff members wore pajamas and brought blankets to sit on. Students also viewed Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat and enjoyed popcorn and cookies with their parents! Each student that attended the event received a brand new Dr. Seuss book that was donated by the Detroit Kiwanis No. 1 Club. The Club donated a total of 325 books.  

Free DPS Family Event at the Detroit Children’s Museum

The Detroit Children’s Museum is hosting another free DPS family event on Saturday, February 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. ‘Walk Like an Egyptian’  this month, where you can: Explore the gallery and learn about many authentic Egyptian artifacts Discover the night skies as Ancient Egyptians viewed them Learn about the significant contributions of Egyptians to engineering and mathematics Learn about the history of Egypt by unravelling some of its myths View the special Student Art Exhibit- created by students from Munger Elementary-Middle School The Detroit Children’s Museum is located at 6134 Second Avenue. Salmon in the classroom

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) program Salmon in the Classroom began on Monday, November 16 at Munger Elementary-Middle School. The school’s Science Department received 200 salmon eggs last Thursday, November 12 from Wolf Lake Hatchery in Mattawan, Michigan, as well as 36 other Michigan teachers. The students will help monitor this magical 7-month salmon cycle while maintaining water quality, keep data of salmon development and then release them in the Clinton River, May 2016! “We are thrilled to watch this amazing fish cycle which will benefit our Great Lakes,” said Munger Teacher, Ellen Hoyer.

Fuel Cell Competition Awards

GOAL Detroit Soccer Championship

The Goal Detroit Soccer Championship took place on Saturday, November 1 where two Detroit Public Schools’ teams took home the win. Earhart Elementary-Middle School’s 3rd and 4th grade team and Munger Elementary-Middle School’s 5th grade team both took first place in their divisions and are now the Goal Detroit Champions. DPS’ K-8 Sports League kicked off its fall season on Monday, September 22 with six athletic programs. The 2014 fall sports lineup included the new city-wide “Goal Detroit” elementary soccer league endorsed by Mayor Mike Duggan and Detroit PAL (Police Athletic League). It included 700 students from 44 different teams including more than 20 DPS teams. Both DPS teams were noted for their excellent sportsmanship at the 2014 Goal Detroit
