Renaissance student receives WSU Med-Direct scholarship

Congratulations are in order for Renaissance Senior Kahlid Ali, who recently received the Wayne State University Med-Direct (Wayne M.D.) scholarship.

Renaissance band racks up scholarships

The Renaissance High School Band is going strong this year earning more than $2 million in college scholarships and grants. The band is comprised of almost 200 students who have earned 40 full scholarships to attend colleges and universities tuition-free! The talented band and orchestras have performed in Michigan, Canada, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky and the famous Carnegie Hall in New York. Way to go, Renaissance! “It has been a wonderful school year so far,” says band director Ronald Malabed. “We anticipate the scholarships to keep rolling in as students continue to audition for universities. I am very proud of these students.”

Renaissance students play at the prestigious Carnegie Hall

Mr. Ronald Malabed is the band director at Renaissance High School. He submitted an audition tape to participate in Carnegie Hall’s National Band and Orchestra Festival that took place on Saturday, April 15. He and the 50 member symphonic band participated in the prestigious event and he said the band performed very well. Malabed said the students were ecstatic and excited. They had been practicing since Nov. 2016. Only the best have been asked to perform on the stage through audition and it is such an honor. He thanks the UAW Ford for funding a large part of the trip. One of the Nation’s Premiere Scholarship Programs Award Detroit Students $20,000 for College Cydney Gardner Brown (Renaissance), and Oluwakemi Dauda (Ben Carson), are exceptional Detroit Public Schools Community District seniors. They have been recognized among the country’s most outstanding high school leaders by the Coca‑Cola Scholars Foundation and have been awarded a $20,000 college scholarship. Congratulations Michigan Chronicle S.W.A.G. Scholarship Finalists

The Michigan Chronicle along with Talmer Bank is holding the First Annual S.W.A.G. (Students Wired for Achievement and Greatness) Scholarship ceremony on Wednesday, May 25 at 6 p.m., at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. The Michigan Chronicle will award 25 scholarships to Detroit High School seniors. Congratulations Renaissance and Central Softball Teams!

At the end of the season only one team in each division can hoist the trophy, and those teams were Renaissance and Western. The championship game was Wednesday, May 11. DIVISION ONE Renaissance played Western at the University of Detroit Mercy Field and won 10 to 6. DIVISION TWO Central played Denby at the University of Detroit Mercy Field and won convincingly 24 to 4.

DPS Students Participate in Kroger’s Ninth Annual “I Can Make History” Contest

Student winners in Kroger’s ninth annual “I Can Make History” competition received more than $71,000 in scholarships and other prizes during the contest’s awards dinner held Saturday, April 16 at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn. More than 400 students, family members and teachers gathered to honor 93 “I Can Make History” award recipients recognized in four categories: art, essay, music and poetry. The Kroger Co. of Michigan received 1,835 entries this year from Michigan students in the 4th through 12th grades. Professionals in each category evaluated the entries and selected the winners.  All entries addressed one of two themes: Name an African American past or present that you admire and describe how that person impacted or continues to impact

Renaissance DECA team takes third place at state event

Renaissance High School’s DECA team secured third place at the DECA International Career Development Conference April 22-27 in Nashville, TN. Juniors Jasmine Jordan, Jordan Robinson and Catera Chambers competed in the “Leadership and Teamwork” state event. Congratulations RHS DECA!
