Get Involved in DPSCD and Make a Difference!

There’s never been a better time for businesses, alumni, community members and everyone concerned with public education to partner with Detroit Public Schools Community District. DPSCD has a new Transition 10 Point Plan in place, a stronger curriculum and academic experience in every classroom. Major worldwide corporations and alumni of local schools are stepping forward to volunteer, contribute and pledge human resources, talent, technology and monetary gifts.

This site will list the range of ongoing programs for contributing to DPSCD efforts to create Centers of Excellence at every school, for every student, in every neighborhood, as well as short term donation and fund raising drives. On behalf of the 40,000+ students we educate every day, thank you! You are a part of the solution.

Volunteer Reading Corps

Volunteers are asked to tutor at least one hour a week in a DPSCD school, working with pre-kindergarten -3rd grade students. Volunteers will have to undergo a background check and will be required to show photo identification whenever they come to a school site. An ID badge will be provided by VRC upon enrollment in the program.

The Volunteer Reading Corps is a program geared toward helping our youngest learners with reading. The Call to Action for a new Reading Corps comes on the heels of test scores that showed Detroit school children lagging behind their counter-parts on the Michigan test. Research shows that it is extremely difficult for a struggling reader to “catch up” if the child is unable to read by the end of third grade. This confirms that we have a reading emergency. As a result, reading failure has exacted a long-term consequence for our children’s developing self-confidence and motivation to learn as well as for their later school performance.

Detroit Public Schools Community District seeks to have all of the current pre-kindergarten students and those thereafter read at or above grade level by the end of the third grade. The Detroit Public Schools Community District issued a call to action challenging the Detroit community to step forward and support DPSCD students by signing up to serve as tutors in the District’s Volunteer Reading Corps program.

We are doing everything in our power to completely remake the academic program in Detroit Public Schools Community District, and we are asking the community to join in the fight to ensure our children have every opportunity to be successful.
